What is a digital twin?

A digital twin is a digital representation of a physical system that is updated with data. NIST takes this approach to describe, measure, analyze and control production processes. It's not enough for a model to look realistic on screen; It should be explained how it is matched with the physical system and with what measurements it is tested.

How to establish reliability?

The intended use of the model, measurement uncertainty, data quality and validity limit should be written together. While the same digital twin may be useful in maintenance planning, it may be inadequate in a safety-critical decision. Therefore, accuracy is evaluated for a specific task and set of conditions, not a single number.

The border between science and interpretation

The use of digital twins in industry does not indicate that the universe is a simulation. The first is the engineering tool; The second is a metaphysical claim. Connecting two ideas can be an interesting thought experiment, but conclusions cannot be drawn without bridging experimental evidence between them.

discussion question

What three tests would you require before allowing a digital twin to make decisions over the actual system? Consider separately the cost of error, the data source, and the conditions under which the model is not valid.
