Deterministic but unpredictable
Chaotic systems evolve with precise equations; yet very small differences in initial conditions can grow over time. Since the initial state of the atmosphere is never known with infinite precision, a single harness is not the only picture of the future.
Ansambl approach
ECMWF generates many predictions by modifying initial conditions and model details in small quantities. The fact that the results remain close to each other indicates relatively high confidence, while their rapid separation indicates a wider range of probabilities.
The limit is not failure
The presence of a prediction horizon does not mean that the model is useless. The model can provide risk range, scenario, and probability rather than a detailed single result. Honest simulation shows the decision maker instead of hiding the uncertainty.
