What is being measured?
Observations of distant supernovae and large-scale structures indicate that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Dark energy is the name used to describe this acceleration; it is not the name of a single directly captured particle.
Multiple cosmic rulers
Galactic distributions, weak gravitational lensing, and supernovae measure structure growth with different periods of expansion. When more than one method tests the same parameters, it is easier to separate systematic errors.
Role of the Roman telescope
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aims to study dark energy and dark matter by scanning a wide area of the sky at high resolution. The results will help compare the cosmological constant, time-varying fields, and modified ideas of gravity.
discussion question
Would a new component of matter or a change in the theory of gravity be more convincing to explain cosmic acceleration?
