According to IGWN's September 3 update, the detectors are in the renewal and commissioning period. The six-month IR1 run is scheduled to begin in early to mid-November 2026. Two LIGO detectors will observe; Virgo will be able to participate with maintenance-related interruptions, while KAGRA will participate when appropriate in the later stages of the run. This is not a plan, not an observation announcement that has begun.

Taking a break does not mean data is lost

The official plan says there may be short low-noise data collection windows during the renovation. If an extraordinary gravitational wave candidate is found in quality data, a public warning could be sent. The detailed schedule for O5 is still being discussed. The next update is projected for October 15 or earlier; The calendar in this file is the version checked on October 5th.

How should we read an announcement?

Our editorial checklist consists of three questions: is the description a future goal, current device status, or completed data analysis? Sharing a date as the "date of discovery" without making this distinction may mislead the reader. It would be incomplete to evaluate a project only by its waiting period. It is also necessary to ask what criteria the relevant target is linked to and how the results will be verified.

Discussion for the community

Would you rather an observatory run longer or work with more precise data? Don't answer as if there is only one correct option: first choose the question you want to investigate, then write down what information would change your decision.
