The confidence trap
A polished answer invites trust. Yet the tone of a sentence and the reliability of its claims are different properties. A language model can produce a confident explanation because that wording fits its learned patterns. Whether the explanation is correct must be checked against evidence, especially when a reader cannot independently verify the topic.
Test the system rather than the performance
Consider two assistants answering unfamiliar questions. One always answers. The other sometimes asks for evidence or admits uncertainty. The second may be more useful even if its prose seems less impressive. A practical evaluation records accuracy, unsupported claims and appropriate abstention across a defined set of tasks. It should also test unfamiliar settings rather than only familiar demonstrations.
Understanding and consciousness are separate questions
Explaining a mechanism, using tools and reporting confidence may reveal useful capabilities. These observations do not automatically establish subjective experience. Butlin and colleagues propose theory-linked indicators for investigating possible machine consciousness; those indicators themselves depend on contested scientific theories. Reliability audits and consciousness research therefore address different questions, even when they examine the same system.
A reader's experiment
Ask a system for a source, inspect the source and then ask what evidence would overturn its claim. The aim is not to reward confident language but to discover how an answer connects to checkable information. For important decisions, use independent verification rather than treating a self-assessment as a certificate.
Discussion question
Would you trust an assistant more if it said ‘I do not know’ at the right time?
