Is talking evidence of consciousness?

The fact that an artificial intelligence speaks fluently, talks about itself, or uses emotional expressions does not alone indicate that it is conscious. The ability to produce language is an observable behavior; Consciousness is about how things feel for the system.

Indicator approach

Butlin and colleagues; proposed deriving computable sign properties from theories of consciousness such as global workspace, recurrent processing, and higher-order representation. This approach is not a “definitive test of consciousness”; is a research framework that regularly evaluates architecture, information flow, and feedback loops.

What does today's evidence say?

The 2023 report did not conclude that the existing AI systems it examined were conscious. He also noted that there are no obvious technical obstacles to producing systems that realize some display features. The door of possibility may be open, but there is no proven claim of consciousness in today's systems. Intelligence, language ability and consciousness are not the same concept.

discussion question

What evidence, beyond behavior, would you need to accept that an AI is conscious?
