1885–1962 · physicist

Can we think of atoms as a classical planetary system?

He applied quantum conditions to atomic structure; He shaped quantum thought with his discussions on measurement order and complementarity.

Contribution: quantum step in atomic structure

Bohr's 1913 atomic model attempted to explain the hydrogen spectrum in terms of specific energy states and transitions between these states. He offered a different approach to the difficulties of classical electromagnetism in explaining the stability of the atom. His 1922 Nobel speech shows in historical context how quantum ideas played a role in understanding atomic structure and radiation. The model is not the entirety of modern quantum mechanics, but an important step in its development.

Measurement and complementarity

Bohr's later complementarity approach emphasizes the importance of the experimental setups used in describing quantum phenomena. Classical descriptions such as wave and particle may not combine all the details of the same experiment into a single intuitive picture. The problem here is not only what the particle is, but also which feature is examined in which experiment. This approach is a contribution to the interpretation of quantum theory; Interpretation is not the same as mathematical calculation of measured results.

avoid misunderstanding

Drawing electrons like small planets around the nucleus is a historical visualization; It is not a complete description of modern atoms. Bohr's discussion of measurement does not say that human thought creates the universe arbitrarily. Before transferring quantum concepts to consciousness claims, it is necessary to distinguish between the theory explaining the experimental result and the philosophical meaning attributed to it.
