Is a black hole really completely black?

He predicted thermal radiation by studying quantum fields in black hole geometry; deepened the questions between gravity, thermodynamics and information.

Contribution: black hole with quantum effects

Hawking's 1975 article Particle Creation by Black Holes shows that radiation like a hot body can be predicted by examining quantum fields around a black hole. The classical definition of a region that does not leak anything out becomes more complicated with the semi-classical calculation involving quantum fields. The work is decisive in the development of the idea that black holes may have temperature and thermodynamic properties.

Why is the knowledge question important?

The change of a black hole by emitting radiation raises the question of how information about the initial physical state is represented. Gravitational geometry, quantum evolution and thermodynamics need to be considered together. The information problem is not solved by a single analogy: the picture of pairs of particles falling in while the other escapes should not be presented as a substitute for the entire computation. Different approaches illuminate different aspects of this problem.

Distinguishing between theoretical prediction and observation

Hawking radiation is a powerful theoretical result; It should not be said that this radiation from astrophysical black holes has been measured directly. The results of similar systems in laboratories are also not the same as the direct observation of the process in a real black hole. This dossier relates Hawking's contribution to confirmed observations of general relativity, while specifically preserving open loopholes on radiation and full quantum gravity.
