Georges Lemaître

1894–1966 · Physicist and cosmologist

What does the expansion of the universe say about its history?

He related his expanding universe solutions to galaxy observations; He developed the idea of the first atom on an early cosmic beginning.

Contribution: a non-stationary universe

In his 1927 work, Lemaître related the expanding universe solutions of general relativity to the velocities of distant galaxies. His combination of observations and mathematical cosmology contributed significantly to the development of the idea that the universe is not a static stage. This history is not a single moment of discovery: Friedmann's theoretical solutions, Slipher's spectral measurements and Hubble's distance studies are all parts of the same research chain.

First atomic idea

His short paper, published in Nature in 1931, argues that the present-day universe may have developed from a very different initial order. The idea of reaching fewer quanta as you move backwards is part of the historical first atom approach. This proposal is not identical to all the details of the modern hot Big Bang model. It is important not to confuse recognizing the historical antecedent of an idea with its current physical model.

open question

The expanding universe should not be limited to the picture of galaxies hurling from a center in space. Cosmological models consider the change of the scale of space over time. Lemaître's initial proposal does not by itself solve why the universe exists or how time exactly began. In this dossier, we read the historical contribution separately from later developments in observational cosmology and the early universe questions that are currently being investigated.
