Are the stars we see enough to explain the movement of galaxies?

The galaxy rotation curves measured by Kent Ford and his colleagues brought the problem of invisible mass into a powerful area of observational research.

Contribution: measuring the rotation of galaxies

A 1980 study by Vera Rubin, Kent Ford, and Norbert Thonnard compared spectral measurements extending to the outer regions of the 21 Sc galaxy of different sizes and luminosities. The rotation rate of a galaxy may not decrease as expected from the distribution of visible light alone. This observational problem required rethinking how we infer the mass distribution of galaxies and how we might search for components that do not produce light.

Relationship to dark matter

The rotation curves are important evidence that points to a wider distribution of mass than that explained by visible stars and gas. Rubin's contribution is not to see the dark matter particle directly, but to reveal the order in the motion measurements. There are also earlier pioneers and later independent observations of the subject; It is misleading to reduce discovery to a single person. Scientific explanation is strengthened by whether different types of data are consistent with the same model.

What don't we know yet?

Deriving a mass requirement from spin curves is not the same as determining what particle dark matter consists of. Alternatives that change the laws of gravity also try to explain some phenomena; these need to be evaluated together with other measurements. Rubin's methodological imprint is that when an expectation does not match observation, we should carefully investigate our assumptions and missing components rather than suppress the data.
