Uzay-zamandaki dalga

Gravitational waves are extremely small stretches in space-time created by accelerating large masses and propagating at the speed of light. The GW150914 signal recorded by LIGO in 2015 was the first direct observation of a gravitational wave from the merger of two black holes.

What does the detector measure?

Kilometer-long laser arms compare much smaller length changes than a proton. Signal rise, convergence and fading phases; It carries information about the masses of black holes, their spin, and the properties of the object formed at the end of the merger.

Separating visual from measurement

The rings in gravitational wave plots are not visible objects. What is measured is space-time expanding and contracting at very small rates. This new observation channel allows studying non-light-emitting events and testing general relativity in strong gravitational fields.

discussion question

What invisible events can be revealed by observing the universe through the vibrations of space-time instead of light?
